These cupcakes are a little sneaky. Sneaky as in they are so dark and black that you wonder if they’re dark chocolate. Sneaky as in they’re black enough that when you hear they are black licorice, you envision that really terrible dark black, sugar filled candy that is passed off as black licorice in the grocery store.
But that’s not quite what these are. These are indeed licorice flavoured, but not overpoweringly licorice flavoured. Not enough that if you didn’t like licorice you would hate these, but not so little that you can’t taste it.
And here’s the other thing: they’re flavoured naturally with licorice root and licorice root tea, so the flavour is subtle and almost sweet when you bite into the cupcakes.
You should know a few things about licorice and why these cupcakes are made using this unusual flavour. It’s not only that I love licorice flavour, but it’s also that natural licroice has an incredible number of health benefits for you.
It aids in digestion and supports healthy gut function. It boosts your immune system and is a powerful antioxidant, and it is very good for adrenal health, making it great for staying healthy when you are stressed out. Furthermore, it is also an anti-inflammatory, so it can be consumed regularly, similar to turmeric, to reduce inflammation in the body.
But the health boost for the cupcakes doesn’t end there. They also contain activated charcoal! This helps the cupcakes achieve that incredible black colour, but charcoal is also great for digestive system, supports the liver and aids in detoxification of the body, as it helps draw out toxins via chelation.
And don’t worry, you don’t lose all these benefits by loading these up with a pile of sugary icing on top. The icing is made from coconut cream, with fresh lavender, so there is no added sugar, and instead, just a thick layer of creamy deliciousness to sink your teeth into, with all the calming effects of lavender inside.
And let’s not forget that these are cupcakes after all. That in and of itself is enough of a delight!
