This post, this recipe, and these ingredients are not Christmas related at all. Well maybe the chocolate part is.
There is no gingerbread or Christmas spices, fruitcake or festive tree shaped cookies. Nope, not even any cookies. To be honest, other than the raw gingerbread cookies, I haven’t played around much with cookies this year.
If I’m being completely honest, being here in Australia, it doesn’t really feel like Christmas at all. If I didn’t know it was December, I’d never tell you it felt like December, and seeing Christmas decorations and hearing Christmas songs with no snow or cold weather just doesn’t really seem right.
Suffice it to say, I’m having a bit of a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit. Not in a Grinchy, Scrooge, ba-hum-bug kind of way, but just not in that usual I’m so excited for all things Christmas kind of way.
Usually, the lead up to Christmas, with all the baking and decorating and Christmas song listening and ornament making is my favourite part. Even more so probably than actual Christmas itself. But this year it honestly feels more like I’m in the throes of summer holidays than winter holidays. Plus, turning on the oven for extended periods of time to trial cookie recipes is not necessarily top of mind when it’s hot outside.
So instead I’m turning on the blender. And I’m straying from all things Christmas and Christmas flavoured and I’m going completely unconventional with these raw Oreo slices. There’s not even any baking involved!
These little treats are perfect for Oreo and non-Oreo lovers alike. Because here’s the thing: I didn’t make these because I’m an Oreo lover. In fact, I actually had no idea Oreos were vegan, and definitely haven’t eaten one in years. But there is something comforting and childhood like about Oreo cookies. Like that one kind of special packaged cookie that your mom would only ever buy you on the rarest of occasions. That was Oreos. My mom baked far better cookies than any store-bought version anyway, so I totally understand, but doesn’t every kid spend a certain amount of their days in the grocery store with mom and dad begging to have the packaged things they think are better and that all their friends have?
Whether you did or not, and whether you like Oreos or don’t, this slice is still for you. You get to make your own Oreo crumble from scratch and then make a creamy, raw filling. You can sandwich it between a delicious crust and more Oreo crumble and then top it off with creamy filling and raw Oreo cookie bases. And then you can eat the whole thing guilt free, knowing there are no additives or processed ingredients, and that it is completely vegan, gluten free and free of refined sugar. Even if it is during the month of December when you do it!
