Every once in a while after a certain amount of passing time, I hear this little voice in my head that says, “hey, it’s doughnut time!” Sometimes it tells me it’s brownie time, or banana bread time, but it seems to be most vocal when it is doughnut time.
When I first discovered doughnuts, doughnut pans and baking my own doughnuts, I was pretty into it. It became a pretty regular affair and I loved playing around with different flavors, flour combinations and mix-ins – cue the chocolate chips, blueberries, orange and Valentine’s day strawberry.
And while I love them, with time, I was keen to explore other baking options and they fell to the wayside a bit. The doughnut pan being sent further and further towards the bottom of the pile of baking trays and tins, and then, sitting, unused but not forgotten for a few months.
But with Valentine’s Day nearing, I heard that little voice pipe up again to remind me that maybe it’s doughnut time.
Maybe it’s time to get out the little 6-hole magic maker, and start making, creating, experimenting. Maybe it’s time to play with flavours, play with flours and feel that smile grace your face as you sink your teeth into a soft, doughy doughnut that is practically healthy enough for breakfast. Okay, I didn’t end up eating any of these for breakfast, but I totally could have . . . instead I saved them for post-long run refuel and had visions of them for the last ten kilometers. Seriously though, whatever it takes to get you though.
Somehow now, I have brought together running and doughnuts, creating in the kitchen and playing around with delicious food and flavors. Sometimes I don’t even know how it happens, but I suddenly notice my thoughts drift to my favourite things. And then they end up back at doughnuts and I think it must be Valentine’s Day doughnut baking time . . .
